Castel Ruggero Pellegrini

Castel Ruggero is 15km far from the center of Florence, an area that has always been at the center of the men’s care. I tried, with the help of my brother, to recompose the history of the area and of the castle, now half-owned by my family, the Pellegrini. It ‘a long history, beautiful and twisted, with mixed success, as a bit the life of all of us. In the end, to know what has happened before us is a great help in figuring out what we can expect tomorrow!

The first territorial urbanization of Castel Ruggero is Roman, more specifically during the Hellenistic period in the second half of the second century. B.C. The settlement was at that time close to the main road network Etruscan-Roman, which more or less corresponds to the current “via di Castel Ruggero”, which borders the villa from Capannuccia subsequently declines to Meleto and back up towards Sezzate.

Few surveys during medieval times. Maybe not so strange if you think about how much this last band of clay soil, before Florence, the first of the Chianti mountains, creates problems to the building.

The next story, well-known and I’m proud of, it is the secular belonging of Castel Ruggero to the family of Alamanni, since the second half of the fifteenth century. The agricultural center, undoubtedly of considerable significance, was built in the location in which it is currently, transforming the ancient fortress in the villa and giving it the architectural imprint that still largely preserves. The Alamanni resided between ‘400 and ‘600: not only Piero Alamanni, an eminent politician and ambassador of the Florentine Republic (celebrated its embassy at Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1487), but also the even more illustrious son of him, Luigi Alamanni.

This extraordinary man, a great humanist and poet of even greater fame, was historian and politician of deep devotion Republican. Luigi, fond about farming, which he very well observed and undoubtedly practiced in its properties Castel Ruggero, far from Florence he wrote his most famous work, the poem “the cultivation”, which he began in his youth and published in Paris in 1546, with a dedication to King of France, Francis I.
